What Was The Titanic

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that famously sank on its maiden voyage after striking an iceberg on April 14, 1912. It was one of the largest and most luxurious ships of its time, built by the White Star Line to compete with rival ocean liners. Tragically, more than 1,500 of the approximately 2,224 passengers and crew lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history.

Some key facts about Titanic:

  • Size: About 882 feet long and 175 feet tall
  • Speed: Could reach up to 23 knots (about 26 mph)
  • Capacity: Designed to carry over 3,300 people but had lifeboats for only about 1,178
  • Cause of Sinking: Struck an iceberg at around 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, and sank at 2:20 AM on April 15
  • Survivors: Around 710 people, mostly women and children, as per the "women and children first" policy
  • Discovery: The wreck was found in 1985 by Robert Ballard, about 12,500 feet below the North Atlantic
